Where to buy matcha in Albania

Matcha has arrived in Albania: Tirana has its first dedicated matcha bars, and ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha can be ordered online with delivery across Albania and Kosovo. This is the short English guide to where to buy it, what it costs and how to tell good matcha from plain green powder.

    Buying matcha online in Albania

OMU Matcha is an Albanian brand selling ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha, stone-ground, 100% natural with no additives, and the tools to prepare it: a ceramic chawan bowl, a bamboo chasen whisk, a chashaku scoop, a sieve and a naoshi whisk holder. Everything is sold online at omumatcha.com and delivered by courier, cash on delivery.

    Matcha cafés in Tirana

If you would rather drink it out, these places come up most often on Google Maps (September 2026):

    • Matchai Store: a dedicated matcha bar on Rruga Sami Frashëri.
    • Bloom the Matcha: a café built around matcha drinks.
    • The Blossom Matcha: matcha bar with hot and iced drinks.
    • Nöje: specialty coffee with matcha latte on the menu.
    • The Back Room: a well-known coffee spot that also serves matcha latte.

A matcha latte typically costs 500–1,000 ALL, roughly 5–10 €. The list is not sponsored and not complete; check opening hours on Google Maps.

What you will find in shops

Supermarkets, organic shops and online pharmacies sell green tea powder from about 900 ALL for 30 g up to around 3,000 ALL, usually without a stated grade or harvest and not always from Japan. Instagram sellers offer bags for 750–2,000 ALL. For drinking with water or for a good latte, look for ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha in a sealed, opaque tin.

    How to choose good matcha

    • Colour: bright, vivid green. Yellowish or brownish powder is old, oxidised or badly stored.
    • Aroma: fresh, grassy and slightly sweet, never musty or hay-like.
    • Texture: as fine as talc. Gritty powder was ground coarsely.
    • Origin: real matcha is made in Japan from shade-grown leaves. Green tea powder from elsewhere is often sold under the same name.
    • Packaging: an airtight, opaque tin with a clear date. Matcha in a clear bag fades within weeks.
    • Ingredients: matcha only. "Matcha latte mix" products are mostly sugar and milk powder.

    How to prepare it

    1. Sift 1–2 g of matcha into a bowl.
    2. Heat water to 70–80 °C, never boiling.
    3. Pour about 70 ml of water over the powder.
    4. Whisk briskly in a W motion with the chasen until a creamy foam forms.

For a latte, whisk 2 g with 30 ml of warm water, then add 200 ml of milk, hot or over ice. A serving has roughly 60–70 mg of caffeine, about the same as a small espresso. The full guide and the recipes are in Albanian: Si përgatitet matcha and Receta matcha latte.
